French Chinoiserie Lacquered Side Table
LES THÈMES
Hand-Lacquered Chinoiserie Table
A refined lacquered side table or stool in the chinoiserie tradition, French in origin and dating to the early–mid 20th century. The piece reflects a European interpretation of Eastern decorative arts—where classical restraint meets ornamental storytelling. Finished in a deep black lacquer, the top is adorned with a delicately rendered scene of blooming peonies and a small songbird in flight. The composition is gentle and atmospheric, executed in softened tones of blush, sage, and warm earth pigments that sit quietly against the dark ground.
Encircling the top is a finely detailed meander, introducing a distinctly classical element that speaks to its Western origin—an elegant contrast to the organic fluidity of the floral motif. The octagonal form rests on curved legs joined by a lower stretcher, giving the piece both structural balance and a sculptural presence. Subtle hand-painted floral accents continue across the apron and legs, reinforcing the sense of cohesion throughout.
In good vintage condition, with minor wear to the lacquer consistent with age and use, visible in the detail images. The surface retains a rich depth and soft reflective quality. A beautifully expressive piece—equally suited as a side table, occasional stool, or decorative object, whether placed beside a bath, in a dressing room, or as a refined accent within a layered interior.
