Vintage Hand-Lacquered Chinese Folding Screen
This striking four-panel paravent is a mid-century work of art, produced in China and bearing its original workshop stamp from Tianjin—long regarded as a historic centre of lacquer craftsmanship in the mid-20th century. Executed entirely by hand, the screen is finished on both front and reverse in a deep, high-gloss black lacquer. The front reveals a continuous landscape composition unfolding across all four panels: a serene interplay of birds in flight, flowering branches, water, and sculptural rock formations. The imagery is finely etched into the lacquered surface and delicately hand-painted in a soft, muted palette of pale pinks, dusty blues, jade greens, warm burgundies, and subtle earth tones. The overall effect is atmospheric and composed—ornamental, yet restrained—allowing the piece to sit effortlessly within both contemporary and more classical interiors.
The reverse is equally considered, finished with elongated panels depicting stylised cherry blossom motifs, etched and gently highlighted in a warm golden tone. This dual-sided treatment allows the screen to move freely within a space, rather than being confined to a wall—an indicator of its quality and intention in original production. The panels are joined by original brass hinges with setting pins, offering both structural integrity and smooth articulation. Condition is exceptional for its age and medium, with only light, honest signs of use. The lacquer remains richly intact, with a beautiful surface sheen, particularly along the borders and edges.
