Ornate Mother of Pearl & Lacquer Wall Panel
A striking mid-century Chinese lacquer wall panel, beautifully inlaid with hand-carved mother-of-pearl depicting flowering branches alive with a pair of delicate songbirds. Nearly a meter in height, the panel has an elegant elongated proportion, giving it wonderful presence while remaining slender enough to frame the architecture of a room. Against the deep black lacquer ground, individually shaped and finely engraved pieces of iridescent shell form the birds, blossoms, leaves and branches, catching the light in subtle tones of pearl, silver and soft blush. Delicate hand-painted gilt linework extends the composition beyond the inlay, tracing petals, foliage and stems with an almost illustrative quality and bringing warmth and movement to the dark lacquer surface. An intricate geometric border of mother-of-pearl and gilt surrounds the scene, punctuated by scrolling gilt motifs and finished with a decorative hanging element at the top.
